Finding the Right Cultivator Type

Once your crops are planted, you’re going to want to provide them with the right care and the right amount of nutrients to ensure you get a good harvest. Cultivators are designed so that their high center passes over your seedlings and other crops while they dig into the surrounding dirt to remove nasty unwanted weeds. Cultivators are great at multi-tasking and can also be used to break the hardest soil into a soft layer so your plants will have somewhere to take root. Once your plants outgrow your cultivator’s center, that means they're well on their way and strong enough on their own to fight off weeds.



There are a couple of different kinds of cultivators. First, you have your primary cultivators, and then there are the secondary cultivators. Primary cultivators are mostly used on soil that has not been touched before or at least ground that has not been farmed for a while. Really, these cultivators work great on soil that is firmly packed, which is why a lot of them come with larger tynes or discs. Secondary cultivators get to work after the initial round of cultivating takes place. These guys further chop up the soil into a finer seedbed for sowing. Secondary cultivators are more lightweight than other cultivators and often times do not include as much horsepower needed from the tractor to pull and use.
